new email address
We have a new email address (our old one will still work as well). Info@DoorHabitat.com is our email address now. This forwards to whatever email service we happen to be using at the time, and will help in reinforcing our WEB URL: DoorHabitat.com. Thank you for changing this in your email program.

new promotional bookmark
We have a little bookmark with Door Habitat information available for your use at the office. Pick up a stack of these little 2" by 6" mini billboards and start passing them out. It's an easy way to help people remember Door Habitat. If Habitat comes up in a conversation, just hand them the little bookmark and they will have access to all the information they need to learn about, volunteer, and donate to Habitat's Door County affiliate. Thanks for spreading the word!

We're on FaceBook
We are starting a Door Habitat FaceBook Group page. This will be a great method for expanding our donor base, to send invites to those interested in Door Habitat activities, and to lead people to the DoorHabitat.com web site. If you have a FaceBook profile, please consider "friending" Door Habitat on FaceBook and spreading the word to your friends. Thanks. - The Door Habitat Marketing/PR Committee

Nelson Notes (an update from Rick Nelson, Executive Director)
From One of our Partners:
The following is from a letter received from one of our partners with her monthly mortgage payment: This house is more than a house, it is a home with love, built with love and hope and dreams, because of Habitat. You’ve given our family hope, no matter how bad things get or have been in the past. God has blessed our family with caring, supportive, concerned, kind people at Habitat. Thank you.
You’ve gotten us out of a very bad situation, into a safe, secure, healthy, loving home. Because your organization and my mother you have all been our angels on earth guiding us and showing us the way. So no matter how many times bad things come our way, we don’t give up hope, we get back up, brush off, with more determination and stronger than before. God is great and works in mysterious ways. Thank God for all of you!
Home Dedication
On Wednesday, May 27th, approximately 30 people gathered at the home of Amy Dettman-Brauner to dedicate the home that we finished in D ecember of 2008 and that she moved into in mid January. While our hope was that we would be able to avoid bad weather by waiting until Spring, we had to put up with rain and high winds. As a result, the whole ceremony was held inside Amy's home. Volunteers who helped to build the home, Habitat board members, representatives from Altrusa and the Breakfast Rotary Club along with Amy's parents and sponsors enjoyed the program and refreshments provided by Habitat volunteers. We celebrate with Amy, the completion of her house in partnership with Door County Habitat for Humanity and trust that she and her daughter will enjoy the happiness of owning their own home.

We are happy to note that less than a month following the dedication of the 27th home in late May, we were able to dedicate our 28th home for Jennifer Kivell on June 26th (photos below). Approximately 40 people came to the event which celebrated Jennifer's good fortune in helping Habitat for Humanity to complete her house in record time. Volunteers, board members, food preparers and financial donors joined Jennifer and her two children for the ceremony which was followed by home tours and refreshments. We have been truly blessed!

Habitat fruit cakes, a Door County tradition for nearly fifteen years, are not just a Christmas delicacy. The ambitious fruit cake team baked a surplus of fruit cakes last fall. This means that you can still get a holiday treat in June for a donation of $8.00 (14 ounce) or $15.00 (28 ounces). All fruit cake income is used to support Habitat's affordable housing programs. Enjoy the best fruit cakes in the county and support a good cause!
Raffles
Both of our raffle projects have continued to draw interest. Tickets have been sold at area business establishments and at county festivals. Drawings for both the garden shed and the quilt will be held on October 10th.
The shed, built by our volunteers during the cold winter months in space donated by the Door County Economic Development Corporation, will be delivered anywhere in Door County. It is an 8' by 12' structure with a gable roof that will house many of your garden and household tools and equpment.
The quilt, created by a group of Habitat for Humanity quilters, will fit a queen sized bed.
We are proud of the quality for both the shed and the quilt. See our website calendar for future display locations. One ticket can be purchased for $5.00 and five tickets have a price of $20.00 for either of the raffle items. Tickets can be purchased at the display locations or from the Habitat office.
A Brush With Kindness A New Opportunity
Habitat affiliates across the country have partnered with Valspar over the past few years to expand their impact on local communities. In Door County, A Brush with Kindness is an exterior home preservation program that provides painting services for homeowners in need. ABWK helps low-income homeowners impacted by age, disability and family circumstances, who struggle to maintain the exterior of their homes, reclaim their homes with pride and dignity. ABWK serves as a companion to our core building program and enables us to serve more families and increase opportunities for volunteers. Most importantly, A Brush with Kindness is part of Habitat’s broader community development strategy, a holistic approach, which assists communities as well as families. It revitalizes the appearance of the neighborhood, strengthens connections within the community, and helps preserve and create affordable housing stock Valspar Paint donates all of the paint that A Brush With Kindness projects require. Families are selected employing identical selection criteria and the existing Family Selection Policy.
If you know of someone whose house could benefit from a new coat of paint, contact us. If you would like to become involved in this extension of Door County Habitat for Humanity’s community outreach, let us know.
Volunteer Opportunities
In an effort to improve the efficiency and safety of our worksites, we are recruiting to fill two new volunteer positions. We are hoping to have a “Site Host” at each construction project for each work day. This position will not be involved with construction activities. Rather, the Site Host will: Make sure that paperwork is completed by all volunteers; Ensure that everyone signs in and out; Oversee recycling on site; Coordinate coffee breaks and lunches; Make sure that the first aid kits, fire extinguishers and other safety equipment is up to date; Ensure that visitors to the sites are directed to the Site Supervisor; Run errands; Check tools in and out, etc..
We are also looking for volunteer truck drivers to run errands to the lumber yard, hardware stores and other locations as the Site Supervisor requests. These “Designated Drivers” would do much of the running around currently being done by paid staff.
Both of these positions will provide additional volunteer opportunities for persons who want to be at the worksite but either cannot or do not want to do construction.
Please visit our volunteer opportunity page.
Old Fashioned Hymn Sing for Habitat
Zion United Methodist Church, located at 8781 County F, will be holding an old fashioned hymn sing at 6:30 p.m., Sunday, July 19th. The Reverend Don Heeringa, a former Zion pastos, will serve as song leader, with Joan Vahey at the organ. The community is invited to attend the event. Refreshments will be served and a freewill ofering will be taken to benefit the Apostles Build project of Door County Habitat for Humanity.
Habitat Resale Operation
Our acceptance of items for resale increased greatly last year after we decided to conduct an annual “garage sale” from our warehouse. People wishing to donate furniture, appliances and building materials either for use in our own construction projects or for resale are encouraged to contact the Habitat office. An annual garage sale will help to raise money to support Habitat’s construction projects. Other items may be sold on consignment through area second hand stores. Some donations will also be used in our Habitat homes.
We need Garage Sale Items
We continue to accept used furniture, appliances and building materials, with Jim Costigan coordinating this effort. These items will be sold at our next "garage sale", with proceeds supporting future building efforts.
