Door County Habitat for Humanity was organized in 1993. We are proud of our organization, our commitment, and our accomplishments. The 27th Habitat home was completed in late 2008, and construction is scheduled to be finished on our 28th home by the end of June.
Habitat homes are built with volunteer labor (and our volunteers are THE BEST!), mostly donated land, many donated materials and lots of prayers! Habitat homes are occupied by families who would otherwise have found the dream of home ownership beyond their means.
We invite you to join with us in our mission of eliminating substandard housing by helping families help themselves toward responsible home ownership.
Welcome to Door County Habitat for Humanity
Habitat Homes are sold to Partner Families who must make a down payment plus perform predetermined number of sweat equity hours. Additionally, families make mortgage payments and pay taxes as any homeowners do.
Mortgages are based on the cost of the materials plus the fair market value of gifts-in-kind. The loans are interest-free.
Mortages are held by Door County Habitat for Humanity, and payments are made to DCHfH. These payments are deposited in a speciall revolving fund used only for the building of new homes. Donations to Door County Habitat for Humanity are gifts that truly "keep on giving."
Door County Habitat for Humanity gives a "Hand Up," not a Hand Out to our Partner Familes.

We're on FaceBook
We are starting a Door Habitat FaceBook Group page. This will be a great method for expanding our donor base, to send invites to those interested in Door Habitat activities, and to lead people to the DoorHabitat.com web site. If you have a FaceBook profile, please consider "friending" Door Habitat on FaceBook and spreading the word to your friends. Thanks. - The Door Habitat Marketing/PR Committee
A note from our Executive Director, Rick Nelson
Dear Habitat friends,
We continue to move forward toward our goal of building three additional affordable housing units by the end of the year. Construction of our 28th home was completed on June 26th, with four days to spare on the June 30th deadline. The 26th was an eventful day as we not only finished construction, but also transferred the real estate title to our new partner, obtained the occupancy permit and held the house dedication all in the same day.
Habitat’s volunteers did a remarkable job, finishing this (the Thrivent Builds home) in only 25 workdays from the time they started in late March. However, the completion of one house does not mean that our volunteers had any time for rest. Without missing a beat, they started setting footing forms on June 30th for our 29th home. That project is our Apostles Build home to which more than a dozen county faith based groups have pledged financial, volunteer and food preparation support. Following the example of the last home, our hope to finish this home before Thanksgiving seems to be easily within reach.

The Apostles Build project reaffirms Habitat for Humanity's ecumenical Christian roots. It seeks to emphasize the contribution of faith based groups to the local affordable housing shortage. Over $25,000 has been raised by those faith based "Apostles" as we work toward a goal of $90,000. As one Habitat supporter pointed out, "Where else could a group of more than ten churches put aside denominational differences to unite in Christ's name to help the community?" If your church is not already involved, call us! You can still participate!
In anticipation of the possible opening of a Habitat Restore in Sturgeon Bay, we are in negotiations to purchase property that would combine our office, warehouse and future Restore operations under one roof. A VISTA Volunteer, who will start work by the beginning of September, will undertake a feasbility study and write a business plan to help our board decide whether or not to move ahead.
A "garage sale" held on June 29th again raised about $4,000 from the sale of donated building materials, appliances and furntirue. The success of these sales over the past year is yet another indication that a Restore could be a profitable undertaking for Door County Habitat for Humanity.
The Women Build project continues to generate much enthusiasm, both for the Women Build participants and the community at large. A pumpkin project supported by Door County Interiors and Design with the donation of land, seeds and equipment, was begun on June 4th, when 15 Women Build volunteers planted over 1,400 seeds. The plan is to sell pumpkins this fall with proceeds being used to support the Women Build effort. The Women Build group also took over Habitat's Fourth of July Baileys Harbor booth, selling pulled pork, cookies and muffins to raise money for the project.
We continue to look for volunteers to supervise Women Build Saturday work crews. Anyone interested should contact the Habitat office.
Door County Habitat for Humanity continues to look for eligible applicants to partner with in the construction of their new homes. If you know of anyone who is in need of housing, is below 60% of the median family income and is presently unable to purchase their own home, check out our website for additional eligibilitly criteria or contact the Habitat office.
We were sad to say goodbye recently to three directors who have served Habitat in Door County for many years: Charles Wingrove, Dan Mortier and Phil Taylor. Their committed support of Habitat has helped us to realize significant growth in our affordable housing projects over the past several years. Dan Mortier has served as a "one man show" in locating and helping Habitat to obtain real estate for home building for six years. His tireless commitment to Habitat has enabled us to increase production of homes since 2005. Phil Taylor took over the job of Building Committee Chair at a crucial juncture, just as we were expanding the construction schedule to include three new homes annually. Phil's long hours spent in estimating, contacting suppliers and obtaining bids has been a key to our recent success.
We are enthusiastic about what we can still accomplish in 2009. A supportive community continues to make affordable housing a reality in Door County by supporting Door County Habitat for Humanity. Three new directors have been elected to serve terms beginning on July 1, 2009: Jim Adams, Bob Gray and Karen Mehigan. Contact us to see how you can
join in making home ownership a reality for peope who could not otherwise own their homes.
We ask that you join us in ensuring the future of Door County Habitat for Humanity. If you can give $10 or $10,000, please contact the Haitat office at (920) 743-2869 today, use our secure online donation form, or mail your donation directly to DCHFH, 57 North 12th Avenue, Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235.
